Baidu.com, Inc. (ADR)
(NASDAQ:BIDU) is broadening with mobile applications that don't require to be
downloaded as it contests with Tencent Holdings Ltd (HKG: 0700) for users in
the biggest Smartphone market of the world.
Mobile consumers can
access so termed "lite apps" for travel, entertainment and
transportation information through search program of Baidu on smartphones, as
said by a vice president (Li Mingyuan) in Beijing. Baidu is also providing
mobile payment services for developers to advertise their applications, he
further said.
Baidu is making effort
to navigate a change from desktop computing where it handles 82 % of the
searches of nation to mobile devices. Last month the company decided to pay
$1.85 billion for the 91 Wireless third-party app store in its largest declared
acquisition to acquire the nation's over 464 million users who access the
Internet from their mobile devices. The app store of company has had 69 million
downloads each day as its open platform appeals to 700,000 developers, as said
by Chairman Robin Li at the conference.
Baidu has been
comparatively fast in advertising its mobile services and it's trying to
manufacture a mobile cloud ecosystem to assist developers constitute its more
mobile services on its platform. The company is still keenly seeking for
acquisition goals as it broadens in services for instance online search and
Internet video.
Mobile revenue of Baidu
was nearly 700 million yuan to 800 million yuan in second quarter, as said by
Chief Financial Officer (Jennifer Li) in an interview on Bloomberg TV in July.
The market share of the company is well above 50 % in searches from mobile
devices, she further added.
Baidu posted a net
income of 2.64 billion yuan ($431 million) in second quarter, exceeding analyst
estimates. Revenue rose 39 % to 7.56 billion yuan. Baidu increased its
workforce by 2,100 people to 24,000 by the end of June through new appointments
and the acquisition of PPStream Inc. for $370 million in the quarter of June.
